Águilas is a delightful town located on the Costa Cálida. A tradition of seafaring now combines with a wide range of tourist facilities, making the most of one of its main attractions, the extensive coastline.
Aguilas, is an old Roman fishing port still dominated by its castle on the headland, San Juan de Aguilas, built in 1579. Aguilas almost marks the border between Andalucia and the autonomous region of Murcia. The town is bathed by the Mediterranean sea, with many unspoilt secluded beaches along 28 kms. of lovely coastline.
Situated on one of the least developed coastal areas of the south, it is crossed inland by high mountain ranges that create an abrupt and uneven terrain. It is a paradise for diving lovers, and caters to all types of aquatic sports.
The secluded coastline when combined with an enviable average temperature, makes it one of the main tourist destinations in the Murcia region. Here you find solitary coves and beaches with crystal-clear water, such as La Higuerica, La Carolina or Calabardina; urban beaches, such as Las Delicias; and one of the best areas on the Mediterranean coast for scuba diving, thanks to some excellent rocky sea beds, above all on Fraile island and in the area around the rock of Cape Cope.
Formerly the location where iron was loaded for shipping, Hornillo Wharf is a reminder that this was once a 19th century mining town. In the centre of Aguilas you must visit the lovely gardens in the Plaza España, the 19th century Town Hall and the impressive church of San José.. At the foot of the castle is the harbour and lighthouse.
The area around Águilas has other places of striking beauty, such as the Cuatro Calas Protection Area.
From among the calendar of festivals held in Águilas, it is worth highlighting its Carnival, declared to be of National Tourist Interest.
Increasingly popular with northern Europeans, Aguilas is made up of 2 bays separated by a rocky headland. The University of the Sea is also located in Aguilas.
Aguilas has a population of 25,700, and is located 70km from Murcia, 95km from San Javier airport and 175km from Alicante airport. Lorca is 25km away. The nearest golf courses are in the neighbouring province of Almeria, including Valle del Este and Desert Springs, half an hour away.
