Gastronomy
The gastronomy of the region stands out for the elaboration of traditional recipes. You'll find a great variation of "tapas" (little dishes) which will spoil your palate: fish, salted meat, sausages and plain fare.
The exquisite shrimps from the village of Garrucha are renowned all over Spaine.
Another legacy of the cultural imprint of various civilisations in Vera is the diversity of gastronomic specialities.
Among the variety offered to seduce the visitor the regional art of cooking is surely one of the most important attractions.
Spanish plain fare is extraordinarily diverse and delicious and the gastronomy of the province of Almeria takes a first place in Spanish cooking. Diversity and variety are the basis of this tasty and balanced cuisine, which has its origin in the countryside as well as in the fishing-villages.
Typical dishes:
Authentic plain fare dishes include, for example: "migas almerienses" (crumbs fried in a pan with wheat, meat, chorizo etc.), pucheros "esparragados" (stew with various vegetables like asparagus, spinach or beetroot) and "papas a lo pobre" ("poor potatoes" - boiled and half-fried potatoes in olive-oil and pepper ).
As in the rest of Andalucia, stews constitute an important part of the repertoire of "veratensian" cuisine.
Gambas de Garrucha (Garrucha shrimps ) are a pleasure for any gourmet's palate - admittedly this is reflected in the price (aprox. 500 Pesetas / 3 € for one shrimp).
The district of Vera has mile-long beaches - therefore fish and seafood are everyday-food: squid, shrimps, cockles, mullet etc. - a party for fish-lovers.
In recent years the local chefs have "won back" dishes that had almost been forgotten and refined traditional recipes, which can be tried at almost every restaurant in the region.
