History The site, on which this prestigious residential golf resort will be built, has a royal history. It was named “Villa Real” by King Alfonso X in the thirteenth century. Alfonso X, King of Castilla and León, was also known as Alfonso “El Sabio”, for his wisdom and scholastic achievements in the arts and sciences. He is famous for his furthering of the universities of Seville, Salamanca and Murcia. Alfonso X was largely responsible for the Siete Partidas, a compilation of legal knowledge of his time and the Alfonsine tables in astronomy.
In 1247 he drove the Moors from Murcia and established a frontier stronghold in Lorca. In those days, he made it a habit to reside at the site which he named Villa Real, on which Lorca Resort Golf & Spa will be built.
The Villareal site was later used as a quartz mine, which closed in 1955. The old entrance to the mine will be a popular spot in the 27 hole golf resort, as an upscale wine and tapas bar is planned for this location.
Situated within the undulating Sierra de la Almenara nature reserve, Lorca Resort Golf & Spa offers stunning views to the golf course and surrounding mountains from all angles. A third of the site is designated nature reserve, allowing residents to fully enjoy the spectacular flora and fauna this area has to offer.
The 27 hole golf course, designed by Dave Thomas and Jorge Soler, is the first golf course for the city of Lorca and will make an excellent contribution to the many activities that can be enjoyed in this area.
Lorca Resort Golf & Spa lies mid-way between the historic city of Lorca and the beach resort town of Aguilas, each only ten minutes away. This gives residents the opportunity to seek the best of both worlds at any time.
Economy
After most of the land and water supplies had been held for centuries by a minority of landowners and by Roman Catholic religious orders, Lorca began a period of economic growth during the 1960s.
Still today, its economy is largely based on agriculture and stockbreeding although its service industries make it the commercial capital of the surrounding area. In recent years, Lorca has experienced a population and economic growth.
Lorca offers all commercial services one could imagine and boasts a thoroughly modern infrastructure. The city´s vibrant economy plays host to shops and boutiques of all kinds in Lorca´s historic town centre, where baroque buildings are undergoing restauration to their original splendour. The city boasts several commercial centres and construction will start shortly on an indoor commercial centre on the road between Lorca and Aguilas. A Corte Inglès department store is slated to open in the near future.
From a standpoint of amenities, Lorca offers the modern Rafaél Mendez high resolution hospital as well as various specialist clinics. The old football stadium of Lorca C.F. will be transformed into a university.
Lorca Fiestas
 |
| Easter-Lorca |
Apart from its history and archaeology, Lorca is well known for its enthusiastic and lavish fiestas, festivals and cultural events. From the 19th century on, religious processions or marches have been taking place during the Holy Week every year. The processions in Lorca are unique for their atmosphere, a blend of gaiety and devotion. Roman soldiers and quadrigas take turns with baroque statues of saints and with amateur actors playing Cleopatra and Nero, the devil and other biblical and historical characters. Declared of national touristic interest, the Holy Week festivities in Lorca are worth a special mention. During the Easter processions, the streets are filled with sumptuous embroidery and costumes, magnificent Roman and Egyptian carriages, skilfully trained horses galloping up and down the parade, a unique atmosphere marked by the rivalry of two brotherhoods: the Blancos (White) and the Azules (Blue), with their respective images of the Holy Virgin, all contributing to a spectacular parade you will never forget.
Lorca is a friendly and hospitable town that offers culture, recreation and a unique gastronomy.

Lorca In the coastal area, the Lorca region consists of the town of Lorca and its outlying hamlets which sprawl along the Guadelentin valley and the coastal area around Calnegre where some excellent, remote beaches are waiting to be discovered.
Lorca has a population of approximately 100,000. The town blends its historical heritage with modern life. Lorca is the most important commercial and cultural centre in the region. It has mountains to a height of 1.500m in the north-west and unspoiled coastal areas. The surrounding areas are covered with vineyards and agriculture.
The ancient town of Lorca is the ideal place to travel back in time. Its location has been a strategic enclave throughout history. From the Palaeolithic period until Roman times, a wide variety of cultures and settlers converged in the town of Lorca. Testimony to this are the great many archaeological sites such as the Milaria Column (Milestone) from the Roman age, the Tower of Espolón or the Alfonsina Tower. In 1964 Lorca was declared to be a Historic-Artistic site

The castle of Lorca, built by the Moors in the 6th century, marked the frontier between the Christian and Muslim kingdoms. Lorca is home to some of the most important examples of Spanish baroque, when monastic orders and noble families filled the city with coats of arms, sumptuous mansions and Renaissance buildings, which even today are still a poignant reminder of the city's illustrious past.
Lorca has a wealth of historical buildings including churches, Roman villas, palaces, monuments and works of art. Altogether, they make up a great set of historical monuments.
A five star Parador de Turismo, a prestigious chain of state owned hotels, is set to open in the near future inside the castle walls.
Don't miss “The Fortress of the Sun”, where you will be transported to the Middle Ages to discover the fascinating history of Lorca: Workshop of Time, where leisure and culture are combined in an entertaining yet educational way.

Aguilas Aguilas is situated in Southeastern Spain with 28 kilometers of coastline which offers many unspoilt, beautiful secluded beaches. It is a paradise for diving lovers, and caters for all types of aquatic sports. With its varied coastline and clear and translucent waters it guarantees to be an unforgettable experience. Aguilas holds the Carnival de Aguilas, which has been celebrated for the last 200 years approximately 40 days before Easter and is one of the largest in Spain with an impressive street procession.
Surrounded by agricultural lands and bathed by the Mediterranean, Aguilas offers the opportunity to enjoy a real holiday, especially in winter. It is a land full of contrasts with the intensely blue sea, rocky mountains and steep valleys, and its sandy white beaches and transparent waters. Moving inland we find a semi-arid landscape of ochre coloured soil with little vegetation, but numerous marine fossils and volcanic minerals.
Not far to the north, the scenery changes again to the impressive dark green of an aromatic pine forest. Aguilas has two protected natural areas: the Parque Regional Costero-Litoral de Cabo Cope-Calnegre and the Paisaje Natural de Cuatro Calas. All these characteristics offer a great range of possibilities for nature lovers, sports enthusiasts or those who want to lose themselves on an isolated beach.

Lorca Resort Golf & Spa enjoys a privileged position in the Sierra de la Almenara nature park, which slopes gently down to the more than fifty beaches around Lorca and Aguilas.

Province of Murcia
Geographically located in south eastern Spain, The autonomous community of Murcia is situated between Andalucia to the south and Alicante to the north.
The area enjoys an average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and well over 300 days of sunshine a year. The coast is known as the Costa Calida, or warm coast, due to its very warm and pleasant climate.
Murcia is characterized by its old history of commerce and agriculture. Earlier its original inhabitants, Iberian tribes, established commercial relations with Phoenicians and Greeks. It later became a Carthaginian colony, followed by the Romans. The Moors established effective and modern agricultural production, which still today is an important economic factor, thanks to their advanced technologies.
Of major touristic interest is of course the Mediterranean coast, Costa Calida ("the warm coast"), with beaches of fine sand. The inland area is dry and offers several towns which still preserve their medieval structures and buildings.
Typical cooking includes stews, salads, roasted meat, rice, and of course great sea-food along the coast. Murcia produces wines of high quality, which are fast establishing a name for themselves, both in Spain and abroad.
